History of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church

Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church, a mission church plant of the former Augusta Street Presbyterian Church in downtown Greenville SC, began meeting together for worship services in May 1969 under the leadership of Dr. Thomas G. Cross, the former pastor of Augusta Street Presbyterian Church. The first worship service, with approximately 90 people in attendance at Northwood Junior High School, began the fulfillment of a vision for reaching the growing Eastside Greenville community.

The congregation, of about 160 charter members, held an organizational meeting in July 1969 and requested to be received as a particular church of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod (RPCES). In late July 1969, Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church was received by the Southeast Presbytery of the RPCES with Dr. Thomas G. Cross as the founding pastor.

In November 1969, the membership pledged funds to purchase property on Mitchell Road with a view toward planting a church that would minister to the needs of that community. Phase I of the building program was completed and the congregation moved into its new facility at 207 Mitchell Road in May 1971.

In July 1982, at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the churches of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod (RPCES) joined with and became members of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).

Over the years, church leadership has placed a strong emphasis on Missions, Evangelism, Church Planting and Christian Education. Mitchell Road continues in it's commitment to Missions by supporting over 30 missions agencies, including over 70 missionaries, in North America and internationally. Locally, the church has actively participated in several church plants in Greenville County during recent years.

Mitchell Road as a member of Calvary Presbytery (PCA), currently has over 1000 communicant members, ministers to people of all ages through a wide variety of ministries. Mitchell Road Christian Academy (K3 - 8th grade) began in the fall of 1973 and now has enrollment of over 400 students. Campus Outreach (Greenville) has ministered among area college campuses since the mid 1990's.
